Question number 107 on Judge Jackie Glass’s questionnaire for potential jury candidates: Do you think the news media always reports the truth? (In fact, media is plural, but never mind.) The desired answer is “Yes”’.

People who answer ‘yes’ to that question are of course in general, to put it politely, extremely naïve. But in America it also implies that they are sure that O.J. Simpson has committed each and every crime anyone can think of. It means he has already been convicted before the trial has started.

What happened? This is the story. In September 2007 Simpson was in Las Vegas.

When I came here I came here for a wedding, I didn’t come here to reclaim property. I was told it was here.

The wedding was that of his friend Tom Scotto, who had asked him to be his best man.

While he was in Las Vegas Thomas Riccio, someone who (like everybody involved in this case, including the alleged victims) had been posing as a friend, told him he knew where to find property that was stolen from him. He made an arrangement with him to get together at the Palace Station hotel to retrieve it.

I had a chance to get some of our property back, property that over the years we had seen being sold on the internet, we had seen pictures of ours that had been stolen from my home going into the tabloids… We called the police and asked what to do, they told us what to try to do, but you can never find out who is selling it. This was the first time I had an opportunity to catch the guys red-handed who had been stealing from my family… (…) I don’t think anybody there said I wanted anybody else’s stuff, just my own. I wanted… my daughter… Mrs. Brown gave her her mother’s wedding ring… stolen.
